Summer Memo
Community Health and Disaster Planning Committee
Greetings, from the Community Health and Disaster Preparedness Committee. I am Megan Goodman, the chair of the committee. I hope you have been able to enjoy the beautiful summer season, even if you are taking classes. Although I am currently taking courses, I am excited about all this year will bring.
Believe it or not November will be here before we know it. I am very excited about the 2015 MidYear Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on November 5-8. I look forward to meeting all of you and offering assistance with whatever I can. The CHDP Committee will be having workshop during the convention and I urge you to attend in order to learn more about how you can implement projects and work towards your goals within your own chapters.
After spending a very productive week in New York City with the entire Board of Directors and NSNA staff, the committee is very motivated to meet it’s goals by working with you, the membership, to uphold your resolutions and help make your chapter stronger through your own committee work. During our committee meeting, fellow members, Johanna Bridges, Director, and Adam Tebben, Director, brainstormed to determine this year’s theme. The final theme is, Prepare to Be Aware, Educate Today for Tomorrow’s Possibilities. The healthcare world is faced with new challenges almost every day and as frontline providers we must be educated, aware, and prepared to face disasters that may occur. The 2015 House of Delegates passed several resolutions related to disaster preparedness through education which is why the committee believed the theme was appropriate. If your chapter passed a resolution at the 2015 Annual Convention, the committee would love to hear from you! Please feel free to contact me at directore@nsna.org
Each year the CHDP committee sets goals for the year with a plan to complete them. This year is no different. The committee plans to host and educational session regarding active shooters in a healthcare facility, update our page on the NSNA website with links related to current events. We also plan to utlize NSNA’s YouTube channel to provide videos educating on community disaster preparedness, such as how to create a home preparedness bag. This year we plan to support FEMA and Homeland Security’s mission in September for the National Preparedness day as well as National Week of Service in January. Lastly, the NSNA Board of Directors will become NIMS certified and we encourage you to do the same.
This year the CHDP committee wants to stay as connected to you as possible. Please make sure you like our Community Health and Disaster Preparedness Facebook page, visit our page on the NSNA website, and reach out to us whenever you need to. Be sure to check out Imprint and look for articles submitted by the committee related to the resolutions passed. If you are planning to complete a project this year, you can find great resources such as the Guidebook for Planning CHDP events on the NSNA website. Do not hesitate to reach out for help when planning. We are here to support the membership and any way that we can to improve the strength of the organization in order to make a lasting impact.
As previously stated, please feel free to reach out to us for support and guidance when planning projects and meetings for your own committees. Projects are a great way to get your committee involved, make a difference in your communities, and gain leadership experience. Every year at NSNA Annual Convention, we recognize stellar projects during the awards ceremony. This year, we want the decision of choosing winner to nearly impossible, so begin planning now! If you have any questions, concerns, or aren’t sure about an idea or project you can reach me at directore@nsna.org. I hope to see you all in Atlanta at MidYear!
